How to understand Patois.....?????

I have a Ja man in my life for the first time!! He's great. But he's trying to help/teach me Patois and something is definitely lost in the translation!!! Have I lived in the northeast too long or am I just tone-deaf? I know it has an English "base". What the hell is the rest? Abbreviated words, made up words, or what??? Do they hold classes at the local college or should I "immerse myself" and live in a Ja household for a month? Or should I immerse myself with this man????????
