How about this...bring up the point that in some case people are required to purchase two seats because of their size and no one is allowed to sit in either of those seats except them. It's a long shot GG, but the worse she can say is no.

You can claim to be have been suffereing from an ailment (enlarged chest), and not having the other seat made the ride uncomfortable.
You can claim to have suffered emotionally as you did not want the seat to be occupied to remind you that you would be without your "friend". Emotional distress.
Thats all I can come up with for now.

You could tell her you suffer from claustrophobia and you had a hard time sitting in your seat and had to take a velum just so you could tolerate the closeness.

If the credit card used to buy the ticket was in your name, you should be able to transfer the flight credit into your name - I had the exact situation with another airline, and when I went to use the credit, I just had to pay a name change fee.
