I'm definitely gonna try it but I'm first going to try to get that chemical locally, I don't wanna buy it online and have the bomb squad show up at my house

No, JC they dont indefinately.
The heat is caused by a chemical reaction that continues until all teh molecules start to slow down and lose exothermal abilities.
