Home Remedies and Natural Cures.
Whether due to lack of availibility of proper medical care or the absence of medical insurance back then, my mom raise my siblings and I mostly on home remedies for childhood ailments, much more than doctor prescribed over-the-counter medications. As a matter of fact, except when we rupture our toe-nails from playing outside barefoot or getting our vaccination shots, I don't recall going to the hospital or seeing a doctor more than 5 times in my young life. Whether these remedies were scientifically sound or not, they often seemed to work. So in later years, I used them with my own kids.
What kinda home-remedies did you grow up on?
Did you use any on your own children?
Do you believe home remedies and natural cures really work?
Do you have any home remedy recommendations for common ailments?

Re: Home Remedies and Natural Cures.
When our toothpaste finished unexpectedly, we used Arm and Hammer Baking soda.
For sore throat: gargle with warm salt water.
For hoarse voice: gargle with lime juice.
High Fever: Cover entire body, (head, face, back, chest) with Bay Rum. wrapped in a bleanket to sweat out the fever.
Stomach Ache/Upset Stomack: Ginger or Mint tea.
Acid Stomach: Teaspoon of White Cane Vinegar
Stuffy nose: dab of Vick's Vapor rub under nose before bed.
Chest Cold and Congestion: Warm Vick's Vapor rub applied to Chest and Back before bed.
Minor Cuts,Burns and bruises:Slice open a Aloe Vera leaf and apply the "juice"' to the affected area.
Major Cut: Ground up the Leaf of Life into a slimy paste and bandage it to injured area. We also used a plant we called "Fresh-cut" but I never found out the real name for that plant.
Strained or sprained muscle; Apply warm Tiger Balm to affected area.

Sometimes, i would wake up with my eye swollen, my next door neighbor's mother told me to slice a potatoe and keep it on my eye for a while. I still do that when/if it happens

Re: Home Remedies and Natural Cures.
Lime is one of the most effective remedies in the treatment of tonsillitis. A fresh lime squeezed in a glass of warm water, with four teaspoons of honey and a quarter teaspoon of common salt, should be sipped slowly .
