Digicel Mobile Web?

Soooo, its like this. I'm sitting here, trying once again to figure out how I'm gonna get online while in Jamaica in a no internet, no wifi, no nothing kinda place. I start looking thru digicel's website and find

Connect to the Internet via your mobile phone.

It says:
What will I need for Mobile web?

When you purchased your new PC card it contained all of the following Items
  • 1 Sony Ericsson GC 75 or GC 79 PC card
  • 1 user manual in English and Spanish
  • 1 installation CD
  • 1 PC card antenna in the case of the GC 75 card.
You would also need:
  • 1 PC or a laptop complete with a 32 bit type II PC Card slot. Your PC card will work with any computer running Windows® 98SE, Me, 2000 (SP2) or XP.
  • 1 Active, GRPS ready Digicel SIM card (prepaid or postpaid).
So, I went on ebay and bought an unlocked Sony Ericsson GC 79 PC card. but it does not have PC card antenna so I don't know what's gonna happen now.

What I wanna know is will this gizmo work with a PRE-PAID digicel sim card? Yes, I know it says, "prepaid or postpaid" but has anyone tried this in real life? Are there different kinds of PREPAID chips for digicel that I'm oblivious to, or are they all GRPS ready.

If anyone has given this method of getting online, lemme know how it worked - otherwise, I'll just sit and wait for digicel to respond to my email lol

...i wonder what'll happen without that antenna gizmo? >>Just realized that the antenna goes to the GC 75. I got the 79.

Re: Digicel Mobile Web?

Hi Mair. Nice to see you around again.

Digicel, LIME (formerly Cable and Wireless Jamaica Ltd.) and Claro (formerly MiPhone) have the facilities to get you online via their cellular network using GPRS. You may be able to just get a PCMCIA or USB data card that works using GPRS, or even 3G (currently only supported by Claro, but soon to be supported by LIME) and use that in your laptop or PC. Those would work with a SIM card from the telcom provider. The other alternative is to hook up a compatible phone to your laptop or PC, and use it as a GPRS modem.

They do have pre-paid data plans. You would need to look at the plans to determine which plan makes more sense from a cost/value standpoint.

You can find out some more over by the mobile forum at TechJamaica.com. People who have used those facilities may have posted about their experiences there.

Good luck.
