Define intelligence!
What makes a person INTELLIGENT in your opinion? Is it the way they speak, the way you percieve that they think, or a combo of both? Also do you consider a person with out a lot of education, but maybe street smart, or smart in another sense intelligent?
Again... what makes a person intelligent IN YOUR OPINION!

Re: Define intelligence!
This is such a tough question!!!!!! I think that Intelligence, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I think that intelligence is possesing a vast knowledge of many different topics. Intelligence is not just being book smart. I beleive that street smarts and cleverness, should also be included. My father never attended college, but is one of the most brilliant men I know. He climbed the ranks in his company to a VP in his company, on a high school diploma.

Yup that why I asked! Maybe we'll manage to have an intelligent conversation, about intelligence!
Ok... hear what.... do you agree or disagree that there is a difference between being clever and being intelligent?

Re: Define intelligence!
Well, I looked up the definition of intelligence, and it states that cleverness is included in it's meaning. I sort of agree.

Nevermind the dictionary girl.... well since you agree with it that's cool!
I think that an intelligent person is different to a clever person! They can have similar qualities.... but clever to me is just witty, being quick on your toes... always figuring out a way around itch.... intelligence is a different level of thinking altogether... in my opnion!

Re: Define intelligence!
According to http://www.dictionary.com
Intelligence is :
Quote:
1 The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge.
2 The faculty of thought and reason.
3 Superior powers of mind.
|
So I would gather that intelligence encompasses the ability or capacity to assimilate facts, analyse them and make decisions based on those facts. Using a computer as an example, the intelligence would be in the particular computer program that is operating. The compuer program takes inputted data, processes it according to pre-programmed rules, and produces some output. The processing that is done is what is looked upon as the "intelligence". Some computer programs are capable of doing more advanced processing on data than others, so they would be seen as being more "intelligent".
So to me, intelligence is not so much about what you know, but more about how well you are able to analyse, understand, and apply what you know.

http://www.dictionary.com defines clever as:
Quote:
1 Mentally quick and original; bright.
2 Nimble with the hands or body; dexterous.
3 Exhibiting quick-wittedness
|
So cleverness seems to denote more of an emphasis on a particular aspect of intelligent behaviour - ie. speed and ease of problem solving. So they are related. Cleverness is a manifestation of intelligent behaviour.

Re: Define intelligence!
Intelligence.. in my opinion.. wow.. bashment.. i like this question. Anyways.. an intelligent person is not a person who is book smart.. because you can be forced to read.... and can recite to me what a books says word for word.. but if you dont understand it, then what good is that. People are intelligent in their own fields.. i like to say atleast. There are people who know sports.. people who know politics.. people who know literature.. people who know history.. etc.. As long as you can defend your case.. about what you know.. and defend it both ways.. cus if you cant be your own worst enemy when it comes to a discussion.. then anyone can out debate you.... ANYONE! So intelligence to me.. is not how much knowledge you have.. but how much you love to gain that knowledge and a lot more. My favorite qoute goes as follows... 'The Truely educated never graduate.' So those who truely want to learn, will never stop gaining the knowledge.. and wow.. mi just realize when i write in this forum i just ramble on.. ah well.. likkle more

Re: Define intelligence!
I also think its in the eye of the beholder. I think a well spoken person...no matter WHAT the topic is intelligent. It doesn't have to be book smart, just knowledgable on whatever they talk about. Personally me....I don't think I sound intelligent when I talk because I never say anything serious. As soon as an intelligent conversation comes up I run the other way....cause I just don't like gettin into it.
Maybe this is where my "stand up comedian" title comes in.....

There's a difference between having proficiency in a particular field and exhibiting intelligence. Intelligence is what makes you proficient. But proficiency is not intelligence. To be good at certain things, your level of intelligence may have to be at a certain level. Intelligence is about your ability to think, solve problems, analyse things and make decisions. How well you are able to do these things in a given field helps to determine how proficient you will be.

All of these defining factors that would fall under intelligence or
Clever derive from what you have learned and stored in you brain
through common sense, it's called common sense for a reason.
It's a common denominator that we all share, we may not all use it
but we all have it.
Your brain is a sponge, it stores vital information,
that makes us function, not a book, yourself our abilities are
created equally. The human mind (anyones is the most
powerful creation ever made). The common man with common
sense is the most intelligent man alive, that would be us all.
The communication process that you have with that common
man ,yourself and understanding makes you intelligent.
My definition of intelligence would be us all.

Re: Define intelligence!
True tings here. I think intelligence also has to do with being able to see the bigger picture and not assuming a lot of things. I don't know it all and I don't know half as much as many of you here BUT I consider myself intelligent. So I agree with what unno seh bout not knowing everyting an still intelligent. As far as knowledge and intelligence...It is my belief that the more knowledge u acquire not to show it off but to grow as an individual is also good and an important contribution toward one's intellect. So knowing something about something makes me think a person intelligent but when one admits he knows not everything and continues to seek knowledge and is open to "variety" in life then in my book that person is very intelligent.
