Question Water Water Everywhere and not a Drop to Drinketh

The water situation in Kingston is quite bad with the severe water restriction. I personally believe it is as a result of the new homes construction that has been going on for the past decade without any growth of the dams or water systems. The population keeps rising but there is no expansion of the dams.

How do you feel about this and what are your thoughts?

I would think that if nothing is done soon enough there are going to become more rapid health issues...peeps need water and will eventually get it even if it's not from a healthy source. Even though its not natural....I would think creating a few resevoirs and managing them would be one solution. Yes this will cost a ton of money, but with all the new construction there should be an imposed fee of sorts.

I use to sit on a water board in mi old home town with construction booming and the costs of running the system increasing dramatically. The solution was to impose a new construction fee. Unfortunately we also had to raise fees to existing homeowners. The fee was dependant on how much water was used. First..a flat fee for up to 10,000 gallons a year, then it increased from there. This seem to help control water usage..yet insure water for everyone.

Like many other essential service through the corporate area as well as in the rural communities of jamaica, there is poor management.

It is already known that our resources in jamaica are limited.
We need suitably qualified, dedicated and experienced resource administrators who are willing to implement LONG TERM planning; which would include gradual but progressive improvement in infrastructure and a strategy to implement a wholesome distribution process.

Instead we have figure heads who make decisions of resource allocations (water, in this case) based on how "greased" their palms can be, and by whom.

While vacationing in Kingston last December, I had to ship down 2 sump (type) pump and jerry-rigged them to my relatives' water system in order to provide a ready means of water supply.

Its atrocious!!!

I'm sure I've read somewhere that water will eventually become a more prized commodity than oil.

Perhaps the investment by corporations in these huge hotels that are popping up should be directed at investment in future water supplies.

Unlike other arid regions of the world the precipitation factor of Jamaica is such where we should be able to adequately have sufficent water for all.

Our problem is simply poor management and distribution.
