Jamaican Bad Name

I have been wanting for a very long time, to express
my frustation in regards to the way most of us
Jamaicans are viewed by (some) people from other
countries, and unfortunately by some of our very own
country men & women.

How many times have you heard some of these most
ridiculous comments...

"You don't look Jamaican"!
I didn't realize Jamaicans had a "look".
"Are you trigger happy too"? The nerve of some people!
(Yes, I was asked that).
"Why are Jamaicans so aggressive"? Being aggressive can
actually be a positive trait. (somehow I don't think
that was what that woman meant though).
"The reason Western Union and Money Gram have low
rates for sending money to Jamaica, is because all
Jamaican people do is sell drugs so they have money".
I am not making this up. I was told that by a
lady from another island.
"Why is it Jamaican men always cheat on their women"?
I guess all of a sudden Jamaican men wrote the book on infidelity.
"Why is it Jamaican women always know how to make
acid"? I don't know. Maybe we were just paying
attention in chemistry class.

I could go on and on and mention a lot of other
ridiculous comments that I have heard, but why? If
someone has dreadlocks...they automatically get
labeled as a Jamaican. If there is a shooting or a
stabbing in a night club...we get credited. Like Buju
said in his song..."anything whe gwaan a foreign a di
yard man get di blame".

Our motto..."Out of many one people".

Jamaica is a beautiful country and I am PROUD to be a Jamaican.
We as a (people)...no matter where our mother was at
the time she went into labor, have to understand that
we cannot go around judging and hating.
I try to get along with all people no matter color,
language, sex or religion.
This world would be mighty boring if we all looked
alike, talked alike and had the same culture.
We have to stop judging many by the actions of a
handful and look at the big picture.

Get to know me before deciding whether or not you like
me. Don't put a wall up because you hear my accent.
There are good and not so good in all races. If
someone offends you...deal with them...don't take it
out on a whole country.

but...that's my opinion.

Shiloh is a good advocate for the rest of us Jamaicans. ppl need to stop judging us because we more aggressive, we black and seem less ambitious than the norm. Our men love to have sex and multiply and inadvertently misrepresent the word Daddy or Father. We work less money than many other countries, our climate is hot and humid etc, but nevertheless Jamaican we name, that not going to change.

Let the good not suffer for the bad - Jamaica and Jamaicans are not all foul mouthed, nor drug barons.

Well said Kc...Im so tired of people using one bad person to judge all...There was this guy i know that did an essay about Jamaicans and he asked a couple of people what stands out about jamaicans..Some people say that they have dreads, some say that jamaicans always smoke weed..They use a few people to judge all of us..Even in movies when you see a jamaican, He is a dread smoking weed..

Why is there such stereotyping for us jamaicans...and especially the men..Now everyone thinks that all Jamaican men are cheaters...
This is so ridiculous!

And maybe if more people were as aggressive and straight forward as Jamaicans there wouldn't be so much bull**** going around. Seriously.....is straight forward not a GOOD thing? I'd rather know upfront than have someone beat around the bush all they lives. You never get anywhere that way.
So maybe you jamaicans do come across as abrupt and abrassive but at least you get your point across.

They always ask me how come I don't sound or act Jamaican. Do I need to be speaking patois to someone who doesn't understand, only fto have them ask me to repeat....6000 times?

How should a Jamaican act anyway, like a mad cow? I can't understand the stereotypes. I really hate that too.

Most famous one: Do you have some weed stached away? Hmm...yes in fact in my back yard. Like all Jamaicans deh pan a high-always.
