With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

this song hails from a group some 40 years together
many many hit songs
they hail from OZ
our distant cousins

the BG's or the Bee Gees
Brothers Gibbs

but this song showed me how powerful words and poetry can be

Smile an everlasting smile
A smile could bring you near to me
Don't ever let me find you gone
'Cause that would bring a tear to me
This world has lost it's glory
Let's start a brand new story
Now my love right now there'll be
No other time and I can show you
How my love
Talk in everlasting words
And dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

another oldie but goodie
from a group that this year celebrates their 40th anniversary
a group that was a mainstay for me growing up
drawing on rock , r&b and soul roots
adding funky jazz notes
latino and caribbean spice
defying all odds
producing at last count over 25 albums...300 top 40 hits
reknowned through the world
first rock group to play carnegie hall
first group since the beattles to play the kremlin

named after a bus system in the midwest
originally: chicago transit authority
now chicago

this song is very short but poignant

This song was only part of another song - "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon". This song also included "Make Me Smile" that was combined with "Now More Than Ever" and released as a single

a long piano solo followed by a long flute solo

it still sends chills up my spine

for in these simple words it expresses what i have always sought in a partner

As time goes on, I realize
Just what you mean to me.
And now, now that you're near,
Promise your love that I've waited to share
And dreams of our moments together.
Color my world with hopes of loving you

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

back to the BG's
you guys know they did the original soundtrack to grease

Song: Grease

I solve my problems and I see the light
We gotta plug and think, we gotta feed it right
There ain't no danger we can go to far
We start believing now that we can be who we are

Grease is the word
They think our love is just a growing pain
Why don't they understand, It's just a crying shame
Their lips are lying only real is real
We start to find right now we got to be what we feel

Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be wo we are

Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
This is the life of illusion
Wrapped up in trouble laced with confusion
What we doing here?

We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be who we are

Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

Grease is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word
Is the word

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

being i am alittle older than most of you guys i grew up with disco
lol saturdays were something else
and the BG's were instrumental in the burgeoning scene

here is the theme song to saturday night live:

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk,

I'm a woman's man: no time to talk.

Music loud and women warm.

I've been kicked around since I was born.

And now it's all right - it's O.K. -

And you may look the other way.

We can try to understand the New York Times' effect on man.

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother,

You're stayin alive, stayin' alive.

Feel the city breakin' and ev'rybody shakin'

and we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.

Ah, ha, ha, ha, Stayin' Alive.

Well now, I get low and I get high

And if I can't get either I really try.

Got the wings of heaven on my shoes

I'm a dancin' man and I just can't lose.

You know it's all right, it's O.K.

I'll live to see another day.

Life goin' nowhere. Somebody help me.

Somebody help, me, yeah.

Life goin' nowhere. Somebody help, me, yeah.

Stayin' Alive --- (to beginning and fade... Well, you can tell.... )

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

OMG, Music is my EVERYTHING. I listen to all kinds of music, from different genres .. even if I don't understand a word of it.
My likes of music is sometimes based on the lyrics other times .. it is the fundamentals of the song .... like an electric guitar will drive me crazy if the guitarist is NICE with it...
Oh man ,,,, I jut love music PERIOD. Damn.
I will explain my love for it when I can put it in words.

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

mostly Linkin Park and Fort Minor ... their music has meaning to it.
If you ever hear a Linkin Park song, you would wonder why the hel is there a person rapping in the song ... and then a screamer?
Cuz they are sooo original.
Their lyrics are poetic and sooooo clear. You can relate to the words in any kinds of situation ...
HAAAA!!!!
And Fort Minor, they are just the same ... the speak about the mishaps of life in general ....

Someone needs to go hear these songs:

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

I never thought of music being or meaning anything to me back in the younger days. Now I see it so much differently. I used to love the American music. All that Backstreet Boys thingy. I loved dancing to JA music at parties and stuff and listening to slow ones at home. Then I came to America, kind "threw away" the JA music because it lost its significance because I wasn't around JA people (I don't really consider my family Jamaican in that way). Now I'm into Rock (that that screaming crap called Metal), some pop, alternative, rarely hip-hop and r&b. I get judged from that but I could care less. I won't listen to "black" music to please anybody. (I got Avril Lavigne in my ears right now).

But music means a lot. Nowadays my MP3 is always in my ears. WHen it isn't, I'm singing out loud, humming, tapping my feet to the music in my mind or bomping my head. I relate to music like blood relates to my veins (corny?). I feel it giving me power to get through and helps to calm me down. It's like telling someone your problems.

Well, yeah. That's some of it.

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

Here's some Avril lyrics that I love because it's true:

I wake up in the morning, put on my face
The one that's gonna get me through another day
It doesn't really matter, how I feel inside
Cause life is like a game sometimes

His CD`s are worth the pricing in his name. Always talking about shooting up somebody.....
And di raatid one name Vybz Kartel ... bout "A gunshot, seh fe nyam yuh food like a bl--dcl--t lunch dat"

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

You crack me the hell up!

Rap is a bunch of sh!t when it's not talkin of valuable things. It's pointless. Only to dance to but if you mimick them lyrics it'd be some nasty behaviour.

Here's some good relatable Avril lyrics: "Nobody's Fool"
Fall back
Take a look at me
And you'll see I'm for real
I feel what only I can feel
And if that don't appeal to you
Let me know
And I'll go
'Cuz I flow
Better when my colors show
And that's the way it has to be
Honestly

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

LOL and you have Evanescence that says the opposite:

perfect by nature
icons of self indulgence
just what we all need
more lies about a world that

never was and never will be
have you no shame don't you see me
you know you've got everybody fooled

Here is the song:

Re: music...what it meant to you growing up ...even now

I think Rap is CRap too. For me, I think it is because I feel most of it started out as songs about killing, drugs, that kind of thing. I have just never gotten past that. Plus, I like a different beat then what they usually produce.

I am all about the words. Love, emotional pain, happiness......just meaningful words. Probably why I am such a Counting Crows Groupie. I feel his pain when I hear their songs. It's also nice to be able to actually understand what the singer(s) is saying.
