Ask "Dr. " Alex....

No, I am not a Doctor, by any far stretch of the imagination.
(God, I am just working on completing my GED at the moment).
But I was inspired to create this thread based one the multiple PMs that I have received with respect to ppl asking my opinions on varied topics.

While I appreciate the value placed on the candor of my responses, I would like to open this dialogue up to any “well-meaning” ETJrs who would like to just throw a question at me concerning anything social, domestic, technical, religious or personal by nature.
No sleeze pleeeze!
(Yes, I know that there are various ETJ categories that lends it self to such).

So while I am no Dr. Ruth or Jean Dixon, please feel free to draw up a chair and post any questions at me, to garner my opinion.
While I may not be able to provide the correct or “most mutually agreeable” answers I would invite my other ETJ family members to also chip in; if they so desire.

So, to get the ball rolling, I will launch with the last question that was PMed to me:

(Dr) Alex,
You mentioned some time ago that you teach computers and I wanted to ask you a question. I am considering getting into Information Systems and I wanted your opinion on this:
1. Should I go to college to get a degree in computers or should I attend a local business school/Comm. College and do the certification program?

My Answer:

Information Technology is divided into several professional categories. From building, maintaining and repairing computers (PC Technician), to providing application support (help Desk), onto writing computers codes in various languages (Programmers) to helping to provide solutions to company's issues by way of computers (systems analyst); and anything in-between.

I am of the impression that you are moreso interested in teh PC Technician area.
A college degree is ALWAYS a benefit in pursuing any career path; especially at the point where supervisory or managerial positions are being realised.
However, in the field of Computer Technology (Entry level), industry is more interested in certifications rather than college degrees.
Simply put, it is much easier to break into the field by attending a 1 year PC technology course at a local training facility/comm college, become A+ (pronounced A-Plus) certified and thereafter pursue other certifications such as those offered by Microsoft, Cisco, Novell, etc.

Yes, college is very important, but ironically, even though its outlined in their job ads, industry is more focused on certs rather than degrees.

Best of Luck

Not really...actually.

I didn't think it proper to post in public , what was sent in private.
But after getting that persons permission, AND at the suggestions of three others, I decided to pull a little desk over in the corner of the ETJ living room, grab a chair and "play doctor" with the questions.

Do you think its a bad idea?
If so, I will discontinue right away...You know I value your opinion, JG.

ALSO, the PMs are just too limited when you are answering questions sometimes.

It's true... I find myself hitting that 1000 char. limit over an over, if I'm trying to say anything of substance. Of course, I try to only say things of substance in PMs so as to keep intact my reputation as a complete idiot on the board.

No, I think this thread is a fine idea.

Dr. Alex... I have this embarassing rash...

No, Alex, I think you can talk about whatever you wish to talk about. And, if you feel like talking today, I am more then happy to listen and maybe even respond.

Just kidding about the "doctor" part.

Thanks for the kind support.

OFF TOPIC: How has the most recent "bad weather" affected your neck of the woods?

Re: Ask "Dr. " Alex....

I was off work Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. Go to the JG & Damswell thread and you can see pics of my Jamaican's first brush with ice and snow.

We had no real issues; but lots of places lost power due to the weight of 12 hours of falling sleet on tree branches and their effects on power lines. People are still without heat. Thanks for asking.
