Do black people get a sunburn ?
Some years ago, a friend told me he is getting sunburns.
Any black person I know I have talked to about this since then, had told me they never experienced a sunburn.
Me, I am so crazy white that if I stay in the sun a little bit too long I turn red like a crab.

Re: Do black people get a sunburn ?
Im italian and I have never experienced a sunburn either... I have dark olive skin and went to Jamaica a few years back and was in the sun all day. Still no sun burn. But you would think I was black by the time I get out of the sun!

Though we have a higher tolerance for sun,.... ie.. the closer a country is to the equator the darker skinned you will find the people, and the higher tolerance they have for heat. But yes we do get sunburned

Re: Do black people get a sunburn ?
You may well larf hunny....
I remember listening to the TV and hearing a reporter saying that while it is rare for Black people to get sunburn, they can still get skin cancer... the best way to protect yourself was to use suntan lotion.
I went out and bought one immeditately - my main concern at that time being my daughter....
That weekend, we were at my parents playing in the pool in the garden with the kids and I pulled out the suntan lotion... my sister laughed at me, calling me a coconut since 'black people don't use suntan lotion'...
I laughed back and told her to try it.... she smoothed some on her skin and apologised immediately as she felt her skin cooling down... obviously she was burning at that time but was unaware.... the bottle of lotion finished that day as all the kids got lathered!!
Since then, she always makes sure that she has lotion in the summer ... sometimes I have to get it from her!!
So all y'all - when you are hot next time, buy a bottle and feel the difference and make sure you protect yourself and your kids.... and the latest reports is that you don't even have to buy the really expensive stuff - the cheapies are just as good!!!
Suntan lotion is not a them and us thing... its a health thing!!

Re: Do black people get a sunburn ?
My husband who is Jamaican is very black. He is what I would call a midnight black, and has has worked out in the sun but never complained of any burning and his skin never peeled. Being of a darker skin color he has a lot of melanin in his skin which protects his skin aganist damage by ultaviolet light from the sun. This melanin that exist largely in darker skin people also slows up the ageing process in the skin to make you have a youthful look at an older age.
My father on the other hand is of European ancestery and when he worked out in the sun he would not come home dark he was totally red, because of the fact of having little to no melanin in his skin and with this you will easily suffer sunburn and skin cancer.
I on the other have have more melanin because of my mother who ancestry is African but not as much as my husband because of my father so I do peel and I do burn to the point where I can't move and turn a golden brown as a result of the Jamaican sun, but when the winter comes here at home, I am semi pale and I don't like that......Jamaica Soon Come! for all the fun in the Sun!
