Can you imagine where Jamaica might be if it had low cost telecomm and widespread internet access?

Or if there were no school fees?

Vodka, dem building a wickid fiber optic cable connection from Miami to Jamaica that supposed to complete in 2006 price of internet ago drop while increasing connection speed to one of the highest in the english speaking caribbean. Uno tink seh call centre reach JA yet wait till the fibre run and dem cool off the killings, mi tink jamaica can have a comparative advantage in that field over India and the Phillipines.

C&W just did what any monopoly does, take money and do as little in return, tank pupa jesus Phillips had enough sense to liberize the telecom market and grant digicel license cause the 14 year waiting list fi land line a country was chupidness.

Respect to Nova Scotia Bank too who cover the trip cause a nuff people a mek money a yard and tink seh dem pickney yah naw mount to nutting, but the stone that the builder refuse will always be the head corna stone...chuss mi.

Well that would help...I remember they had a free trade zone in Mo' Bay with the idea for JA based call centers. Other than "de-accenting" the reps, the cost and quality of the communications connection was the big problem. Call centers are very Labor heavy. JA obviously does well for Labor rates, but if your telecomm costs is 20 X higher than other countries, there is no advantage.

Actually the call centres grow out of the free trade zone area in Montego Bay and cant find reasonable commerical space now...dem naw look a downtown because of "safety reasons", the big difference with call centres down there now is they have either partial or full jamaican owners, as mi seh only we can save wi self. look up a bredda name Casserly, i think he was observer business leader couple years back, dis bredda rent the entire suarez circus fi him staff recently, part owner of one of the largest call centres down there...yeah man Vodka tings a gwan a yard....mi a read seh acre a land now cost 1 million us in a golden crescent a new kingston, one million us...real estate a boom a come too. mi a creeps buy piece a land here and there cause mi know what coming in 2-5 years.

Vodka, the industry down there with serious potential is tourism (health, eco, cultural), IT/software and call centers then branch out to software troubleshooting, real estate/construction, and financial services. There are lots of potential in these areas. The development of downtown is key though, close to major ports and airport, could be a dynamic place with right investment..imagine lofts overlooking the Kingston harbor, easy commute to work, and New Kingston night life...man if the crime ting get under control....pupa jesus not even a stone we can afford dung a jam rock.
