Yes, caste in India has much more to do with class. As your caste clearly defines your standing in society. Irrespective of your personal abilities, you will be unable to progress further than the boundries set out for you.
The same could be said when refering to half caste people. Due to their so called tainted blood line, they are unable to be thought of as white, but in some instances be deemed superior to blacks. An attempt to reinforce feelings of superiorority by the white population.

I'm not aware of the term "mulatto" being an offensive term. It is not used much in Jamaica today, but in teaching West Indian history, it is used. I guess in some cultures it looked on as offensive, while in others it is not.

Maybe one day we will start using the term "Grey" (Gray) to define such categories....
Then again, maybe one day we will just call everyone "people".

And that's the part I found to be hilariously stupid, when I was in the UK.

Re: Wll the Jamaican guys like us?
Mulatto is a slave term.
BUT I think that this thread is is hilarious.
Its the same as everywhere else, good guys bad guys, wtf?
I mean they are just more open, and in your space. They know what they want and go for it.
As for a guy here, they arent so open, even if they are ready to take you home.

Re: Wll the Jamaican guys like us?
I dated a guy years ago who whose mother was english and whose father was African American - he called himself mulatto.
I never heard it meant in an offensive way but I will never use it now.
I honestly don't want to offend anyone. Different cultures and backgrounds intrigue me.
Most of us Canadians are mixed heritage - myself I am half english, and the other half Irish, Scottish, and French. I just call myself a Heinz 57.
I agree with Alex - maybe someday we will just call ourselves people.
Sounds reminiscent of John Lennon's Imagine.....
