trust me i hope thats what it is, as i may have to review my friendship
yah... i hate this feeling... BUT... i think there is obviously a huge opportunity for growth... if you are willing to help impart the 'lesson' to her...

i actually received this email today from someone i classed as a good friend and its disturbed me on several levels. its got me questioning my friendship with her and how well i really know her. it was a fwd from many other email addresses.
"Black hurricanes....
Well, it appears our African-American friends have found yet something else to be pissed about. A black congresswoman (this would be Sheila Jackson Lee, of Houston), reportedly complained that the names of hurricanes are all Caucasian sounding names.
She would prefer some names that reflect African-American culture such as Chamiqua, Tanisha, Woeisha, Shaqueal, and Jamal. I am NOT making this up!
She would also like the weather reports to be broadcast in 'language' that street people can understand because one of the problems that happened in New Orleans was, that black people couldn't understand the seriousness of the situation, due to the racially biased language of the weather report.
I guess if the weather person says that the winds are going to blow at 140+ MPH, that's too hard to understand
I can hear it now: A weatherman in New Orleans says...
Wazzup, mutha-fukkas! Hehr-I-cane Chamiqua be headin' of yo ass like Leroy on a crotch rocket! ***** be a category of ! So, turn off dem chitlins, grab yo' chirren, leave yo crib, and head of de nearest FEMA office fo yo FREE sh*t!"
I found that funny......
Took it in the vein it was intended and it was funny...
what do you make of government attempts to re-dress the balance (both in racism and sexism) through those job adverts that say 'we welcome applicants from ethnic minorities' etc. when i worked for social services they employed a childrens counsellor for the kids in the unit i worked. a much needed post and a well-qualified individual - however when he started he was introduced as Young Peoples Black Counsellor (this was SOCIAL SERVICES!!!). this was hastily re-worded after an uproar. now i work for the fire service (another largescale government institution) im told that out of every 10 firefighters they recruit, 2 HAVE to be women to meet government guidelines. personally as a woman i would like to be given a job on my merits not on my gender because of patronising government legislation.
I admit to being concerned by this vision of positive discrimination....
At the end of the day white males will be discriminated against - how can that be considered fair??
sure will. im baffled cos she didnt attach a comment to it, just forwarded it from someone who had forwarded it to her. shes white canadian with a black jamaican bf and we have shared many experiences in ja together and she knows my stance on racism. i cant believe she could think it was funny or think i would think it was funny or even wanted to read it?

Jel how do you know how it was intended if you do not know the sender, and say for instance it was not intended to offend does that make it less offensive

You can't live on assumptions!!!
LS said that it was an email that had a million other email recipients prior....
IMO it was a 'standard joke' email that gets forwarded to everyone in your address book....
I really honestly didn't see anything offensive in it at all....
For me it was a bit like reading a real McCoy joke!!! Nothing more nothing less....
Seriously 1stP - if one of your black friends sent that to you, wouldn't you have laughed????
Besides - from LS's perspective it was sent to her by a friend.... unless the characteristic of this friend has changed dramatically in recent weeks I can see no reason why LS would need to question this person's friendship!

Laugh!!!!
Would never happen, my black friends would know better than to send me that.
I gotta jump in here..some of the funniest **** I heard in my life came from the likes of Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle and Richard Pryor when they make fun of black people or black lifestyles on stage. Everyone's sense of humour is different...and even though this sounds hypocritical a joke about black people from a black person always seems less offensive.
Hence a midget will do short jokes..fat comic does fat jokes etc...it is the cornerstone of stand up comedy.
Would people be offended if the same email was quoted out of Chris Rock?
IMO ... I think people would laugh not cringe.

to be honst hunny... I cringe when anyone mentions race or skin color in anything... because unfortunately there is going to be someone that is offended...
and we should all try to keep from offending each other...
promote love not hate... even if it is of your own race???

True..but differences in cultures and race should only make mankind stronger.
IMO embrace and be proud whatever your race. We all have qualities that we bring to the big party.
