Thanks...
Did you read the comments after the posts?
REgardless of the historical context of blackface in the US... putting face paint on white kids, even without the historical blackface context, is offensive... it's like saying "pretend these white kids are black and you might care a little more about them..."...
Ignorance on a global scale...

I admit I have never liked blackface.

Don't sweat it JG I respect your honesty and your opinion.
Maybe in the next lifetime you'll come back as a black person and then the lightbulb will come on.
I will concede that if anyone walked in someone else's shoes they would form a different opinion.

i actually received this email today from someone i classed as a good friend and its disturbed me on several levels. its got me questioning my friendship with her and how well i really know her. it was a fwd from many other email addresses.
"Black hurricanes....
Well, it appears our African-American friends have found yet something else to be pissed about. A black congresswoman (this would be Sheila Jackson Lee, of Houston), reportedly complained that the names of hurricanes are all Caucasian sounding names.
She would prefer some names that reflect African-American culture such as Chamiqua, Tanisha, Woeisha, Shaqueal, and Jamal. I am NOT making this up!
She would also like the weather reports to be broadcast in 'language' that street people can understand because one of the problems that happened in New Orleans was, that black people couldn't understand the seriousness of the situation, due to the racially biased language of the weather report.
I guess if the weather person says that the winds are going to blow at 140+ MPH, that's too hard to understand
I can hear it now: A weatherman in New Orleans says...
Wazzup, mutha-fukkas! Hehr-I-cane Chamiqua be headin' of yo ass like Leroy on a crotch rocket! ***** be a category of ! So, turn off dem chitlins, grab yo' chirren, leave yo crib, and head of de nearest FEMA office fo yo FREE ****!"
Right! That's my point... Good = White and Black= Evil is one of those societal connotations that has been applied to PEOPLE... so when a company plays off of the good v evil by using Black v. White... they exacerbate a belief system that is inextricably linked to our race...
I didn't make this up... it's been studied and theorized...for ages. There is a whole body of study called Critical Race Theory...
And VW received a lot of criticism from the black community when this ad first aired... so much so, that it pulled it from it's ad campaign immediately. Did they intend it to be racist? I doubt it. But my question is, were there any Black executives sitting around the table when they came up with it? Doubt that too...
i wanna go to MissB's class! your a good teacher. i like a lot of bell hooks literature too if any of you fancy a good read.
Following on from the Racism thread...just wanted you all to try a little experiment.
Next time you are infront of the TV for about a hour, just count the number of times you see a racial stereotype especially in the adverts.
A rough example:
Medical adverts where non white staff are just the medical help/nurses..and all doctors are white.
or
if there are actors on TV... the black person (nearly always the black MAN) will be at the back of the group or positioned slightly lower in height than the white person.
or
In a news report..if it is something bad like unemployement or violent crime count the ratio of non-white to white.
It is always subtle but there will be a negative/subservient image attributed to non-white people.
Let me know what you find.
what do you make of government attempts to re-dress the balance (both in racism and sexism) through those job adverts that say 'we welcome applicants from ethnic minorities' etc. when i worked for social services they employed a childrens counsellor for the kids in the unit i worked. a much needed post and a well-qualified individual - however when he started he was introduced as Young Peoples Black Counsellor (this was SOCIAL SERVICES!!!). this was hastily re-worded after an uproar. now i work for the fire service (another largescale government institution) im told that out of every 10 firefighters they recruit, 2 HAVE to be women to meet government guidelines. personally as a woman i would like to be given a job on my merits not on my gender because of patronising government legislation.

I'll be curious to see what she says!!! Hope you will keep us updated!
sure will. im baffled cos she didnt attach a comment to it, just forwarded it from someone who had forwarded it to her. shes white canadian with a black jamaican bf and we have shared many experiences in ja together and she knows my stance on racism. i cant believe she could think it was funny or think i would think it was funny or even wanted to read it?
Maybe she knew it would outrage you and knowing that you were outspoken (I may be reaching there.....hee hee) would do something about it.
