Vacation or not; I still dont quite understand the logic of the responses so far.

Immediately it was assumed that the man was a playah and that the friend was also interested enough in the guy that it would risk the friendship to proceed.

It was not meant as an instigation to fight over a man. All I am asking is about you'all's inclination to make a move on a guy that you meet at the same time as another friend, but you are not yetsure of her (your friend's) interest in him as well.

The gist of my query is whether or not you have the gusto to claim first dibs and to let the guy know of your interest in him BEFORE he expresses same to you.
