Re: Who are you in the family?

Now here's a question for all this....

Are these who we REALLY are?

I just read an interesting little book called, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. He says in this book that we "domesticize" ourselves by learning who we are by what the adults around us tell us. When we believe what they tell us, we agree with them. We do this because we don't know who we really are. Then we develop an image of perfection that we never live up to. In order to break this cycle, we need to live by new agreements. They are the four agreements in his title. They are;

1. Be impeccable with your word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don't take anything personal. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don't make assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always do your best. Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstnace, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse and regret.

I only mean to bring this all up because I thought the book was really good. And upon re-reading this thread, found it interesting to see all the "agreements" we have with our family members. It's nice to know we don't have to live up to those agreements. Anyway, this could have been in the book review thread (I may just do that, too.), but seemed equally appropriate here. Thanks.

Talking Re: Who are you in the family?

I'am the oldest of 4, 2 sisters and 1 brother. I'am the giver and the helper. I've always been the favorite sister, niece, and daughter. Over the summer I went on vacation and took the whole family with me. I'm always thinking for others.
