And the illness continues!....Ok here is a perfect example...I walked into the service station today and as I walked in I saw two Black men standing by the window waiting for the lady to help them...I walked up and she smiled and said can I help you...the man who was there already when I came in asked what about him...she said in a very snotty tone...I am helping her I will be right with you....and she gave me that sickening smile like I am supposed to be in the club with her....I looked at her and said you need to take care of them they were here first and in fact I walked out and didnt give her my business...went down the highway I was so disgusted at how that woman wouldnt even have waited on those men if I didnt embarras her into it...uuuugh! And taht because I was white she thought I would appreciate using me white privelge over them.
In a situation like that HT - where the racism is blatant, do you not believe it would be appropriate to take up your disgust with the management of this service station - citing her inappropriate behaviour towards legitimate customers....???
Sometimes, walking away in silence is far worse as even though you don't agree with it, your silence can be taken as an agreement...
I truly believe that, certainly in the UK, the fact of 'ethnics' remaining silent to the racism is why it persists.... I know - I'm guilty of the silence every day at the hands of my direct line manager....
Having spent time on forums like Digital Spy and read comments from the users of The Sun online - racism is blatant in the UK.... with people hiding behind online persona's and newspapers manipulating words...
Certainly The Sun seems to have a campaign against the actions of Naomi Campbell (calling for her to be imprisioned as 'celebrities get away with crimes') whilst supporting the likes of Pete Doherty & Amy Winehouse...
Jel, I agree I did not have a good feeling walking away, but it's a family owned and operated business and the woman was the owner's wife and I am quite certain he will do nothing about it, but I will tell everyone I know not to use that business and why.

I see... it is difficult if she owns it... I hope your friends and colleagues will support you and use another garage... People need to unite...
a black guy i used to work with took a local van hire firm to court and won. he'd walked in to hire a van and was told there were none available. getting the feeling it was down to the colour of his skin he asked a white friend to go in straight afterward to ask for one. the white guy got it. dunno what the 'compensation' or whatever was but doing it for the principle was enough. this was only a couple of years ago in Darlington, County Durham.

and then ppl wonder why so many ppl of color are ANGRY!!! and have so much RAGE..
I know you felt disgust at witnessing this type of thing. But it would be a diffrent story if this was YOUR LIFE and you faced this typa thing on a daily basis--
i think what makes the problem worse is the ppl dont really want to DEAL with the race issues. They want to pretend that "we are all the same" "racists are dumb" "only difference is skin deep" ---and when someone comes along and says "NO WE ARE NOT THE SAME...they get a BRAND!--
pretending we are the same is adding insult to the injury the ppl of color face in this world. EMBRACING the differences and appreciating them would take us a WHOLE lot further..
but ppl dont want to do that cuz in my expereince...if you dont share the same view as the masses...its like virtual "lynching" that goes on in here.
maybe when ppl stop being FAKE and start being REAL, we can have a real and true discussion on the subject!

Or maybe some people actually do believe we are all the same. It's not fake when you actually believe it.

its doesnt make sense that we are the same when we are from diferent places and have different cultures and have different expereinces..
HOW really DOES THAT MAKE US THE SAME?
if you have wound that is festering...u lance it (it will be excruciatinly painfull) but you lance it, cleanse it and even though it may leave a scar...the wound will heal.
but the attitute here is like u are lancing the wound ONLY to pour salt in it and pretend that you belive that action will heal the wound. But this action will NEVER MAKE the wound heal. It may cause something much worse!
yall do know better even if you pretend you dont
btw..def of SAME: Corresponding so closely as to be indistinguishable. 2. Remsembling in evey relevant respect. 3. EQUAL of value and importance.
NOT THE SAME!...but thats ok! when we admit we are not the same and EMRACE the differnces and learn bout them..then healing can start. but u nah ready fi dat!
My definition of the same on this subject is of the human race. I don't treat people differently unless they give me reason to do so. And, that has to do with attitude.

I have to agree with ladyR on this one. I know what you mean JG that you personally believe that all people are the "same"... you mean that you don't see yourself as "superior" to others because you are white...
HOWEVER...
The world is a very different place for people of color (and I am not speaking solely of black people)... If you are a person of color you face prejudice and discrimination and racism everyday. And LadyR is right... when it comes to the REALITY of white privilege and both individualized and institutionalized racism... we are LIGHT YEARS away from healing long standing wounds. So in that regard... with many of my friends (including my boyfriend) who are black, it is insulting to say that "we are all the same" because we really are not in terms of our daily experiences with race and racism.
I'd like to pose another question that arose as a result of my having a discussion about race (sp. in the US) now that we have our very first black man as a real contender for the presidency (YES!!!!!!!!).
We were discussing race and the racial divide in the US and I said that I believe that in some ways Barack's presidency could pose both a positive and a negative in terms of race in our country...
On the one hand we would have undeniable positive role modeling for young people of color who could now see themselves reflected in the most powerful man in the country and arguably the free world...
But on the otherhand, we could potentially have people (esp. white people) using him as an "example" of the fact that "see-- we don't have a problem with racism in the US-- we have a black president"... which we all KNOW is not the case...
So... he does present a fascinating dichotomy in that regard! What are your thoughts?

Honestly....my thoughts are that he is the best person for the job at this point in time. Because of my views on the last 8 years of the current president, I personally do not want to see another Republican in office any time soon. I like Hilary a whole lot as well, which is why I'd personally like to see her as his Vice-President. I think most of what he says, his political play thus far, and have high expectations for his enthusiasm. For me, it has nothing to do with the color of his skin. I DO NOT see it.

How can you NOT SEE IT? He is the first presidential candidate in the history of presidential campaigns who had to make a (30 minute) speech about the state of race relations in the United States? He is the first presidential candidate who had to have Secret Service protection from the moment he announced his candidacy... He is the first presidential candidate who has had his religious affiliations with a controversial BLACK preacher scrutinized relentlessly...
Even HE sees it. I agree with the points you raised above. But to say that you don't SEE a person's skin color and all of the social and political connections to it is just the equivalent of burying your head in the sand, JG.

I gotta tell you, I am a little tired of people telling me what I see and what I must see and all the inuendo crap that goes with it.
I see him as a man............the best political candidate at this point in time.....End of MY story on him.
You are entitled to see and think whatever you like. I will not harrass you on that. Just remember to return the favor.

I quite a job as dentist assistant in 2002 because of racism. The dentist was mistreating a black lady and making disgusting remarks about her when she left... right there on the spot I gave him my white jacket and my keys and told him to go %#$@ himself
