No I don't think so either. I just think its an interesting observation that people must mention it when it really DOESN'T have any relevance.
LOL my gramma's funny....when she's telling a story about maybe someone in the checkout line at the supermarket, she feel the need to let us know that "she was fat but such a sweetheart". And after hearing the rest of the story, we didn't need to know that she was far OR a sweetheart.
LOL.
I think it is just an expression of how the speaker distinguishes the person spoken of, in their own mind.

I hate when people praise Obama...and Martian Luther King..then raise their eyebrows or kiss teeth over a interacial couple. Or when a Jamaican makes fun of a white girl or guy dancing to Jamaican music. Or when a white person thinks it's odd to see a car full of black people listening to ACDC. Why praise their dreams and what they stood for if your not willing to embrace it. If it was so easy for the races to unite...Obama wouldn't be a big deal..and Dr. King wouldn't have had to give a speech!!
I don't mean to be sarcastic but, I don't see the relevance.
Was Obama or Martin Luther King married to White women as well?

Nope that's not what I meant. I was referring to people who embrace his dream of uniting us...white and black not seeing skin color, but still make serious racial divisions, and racial judgments every time they see white and black together..or a white or black person period!
I was wondering the same thing but decided not to ask.
With Obama I can understand, he's mixed. But MLK????
Now THAT I have a problem with.
Mixed??
Who isn't mixed?
The darn man is BLACK, period. No Blacker or Whiter than me or MLK. So what if his mom is of Irish decent? He is BLACK>
America now has the first president who is Black. it matters not, what other spinoff he is, because most of us whose ancestors were slaves were also spin offs of some sort.

Praisng a man for his stand on equality does not imply that you support the concept of integration.
Equality simply means that a man (or woman) should be treated fairly without regards to his race or color. That has nothing to do with co-mingling amongst races.

Umm Alex..that doesn't make sense. How is he any blacker than he is whiter?? One parent is full black..one is full white. Equal of both..which I think is a fanastic mix for the leader of a country of many different races/cultures.
If his dad is African..it makes sense that its more likely he will take after the black genes..since they tend to be more dominant. I think it's appropriate to refer to him as mixed..since he represents both black and white...and its a great symbol of the unity of our generation..which still has a way to go but is getting there.
I see what your saying...just interesting how you refer to him as BLACK...when he is HALF WHITE. Not a spin off..half and half. Equal of both. HOWEVER...that gets into touchy area again.
I think it's just as important to white people who are anxious to stop being blamed for the evils of their ancestors and prove they are a different generation..as it is to the decendants of slaves who were anxious to see the biggest proof that times had changed. He's a huge symbol to all of us.
Except for the fact that Dr King stood for more than just equality of all..he firmly stood for inter mingling which to me represents equality Alex!!!
"I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood."
"I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers."
"And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!""
"Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood"
Dunno about you..but sure sounds like to me he stood for alot more than just equal rights.
He wanted us to stop seperating ourselves because of color..and live as one people..both in equal rights and as brothers and sisters of one world, and one people.
If you don't mingle...your saying you have an issue with someone because of their color. If it wasn't an issue of color..then why would a white man and white women who have everything in common be a problem?? Why would a black person feel akward walking into an all white bar..or a white person into an all black one if that's where they want to be and find their interests? I say forget skin color...and be the person that makes you happy..whether its being a white girl in Jamaica...or a black women in Canada...whether it's married into your own race..or into another..whether it's befriend someone of your own race..or another.Judgments should be made based on character..not the things you are born with and have no control over!

Obama is no more half and half than a carton of milk, me or Malcolm X.
He is s Balck man.
His mother could even be Blue and comes from the planet xeon. Defining that is is Black is not excluding any other race that he may be a part of.
As I said before, MOST of us whose ancestors were taken from Africa as slaves, forced to work on teh White mans plantation, slept with White women while their women were raped by White slave masters, are also half and half, 3 quarters and quarter, and any other combination you can find.
we are ALL still BLACK.
Sorry, it may sound harsh but such is reality at times.
When Obama won, he did not go down in histiry as America's first Half and Half President. he is listed as America's first AFRICAN AMERICAN. Translated in Jamaican: "HIM BLACK!".

Except for the fact that Dr King stood for more than just equality of all..he firmly stood for inter mingling which to me represents equality Alex!!!\ I dont disagree with that. Everyone knows that MLK wanted equality as well as integration. You obviously misunderstood what I said.

My point about MLK is...Not because someone (Me, he, she or the old lady) admires and reveres MLK for his stand on equality and his fight for integration, it does not mean that WE have to support BOTH of them as well.
Praising someone for their tenancity and endurance in a particuar struggle does not NECESSARILY mean that we have to support the actual agendas IN ITS ENTIRETY.
Malcolm X wanted equality as well, but no integration. He wanted eqaulity and Black Power: Not the power to take over the nation, but th power to control our own destiny without being dictated to by the Whites. In his vuiew, that was only possible by segregation.
I praise Malcolm X as equally as I praise MLK, but I dont support ALL of his agendas either.

Well thats your opinion...I just disagree. Your attitude is half of what's wrong with America. What if the man took after his mother and came out looking more white than black...would he be just another white president?? Same blood..same genes...just a different shade of skin!!
What the hell is so important about skin color?? The man is half black...he still has ancestors that were slaves...and ancestors that may have been slave owners. The shade of his skin determines which side claims him???
As long as people judge by the shade of a persons skin..racism will exist on both sides.
And that's a bit high and mighty to claim him as black when he's just as much white. Your saying that the white doesn't count because his skin came out darker!! Bet you wouldn't say that if he came out super light!!
I am not insulting either side..or you Alex...these are just my opinons.
I know girls who have the same mixed blood as me...BUT they came out dark. They are accepted by the black community where as I'm just seen as white. How does that make sense when we both have the same mixed genes?
So if I became President would I be the first black lady president because I'm mixed..or would I just be another white pres???
I thought our generation had learned not to judge by the color of ones skin.

Fair enough...but that is then just being proud of his determined spirit..not what he was fighting for. I admire determination as well as anyone..but I don't admire hitler for trying to whipe out the entire Jewish race!! I think to say I admired Hitler would imply I admired his cause. Otherwise I would just say..I admire anyone determined to stand up for their beliefs..no one in particular..just anyone!!

I sense an atmosphere of anger. If I am correct, then we have defeated the whole purpose of what thsi thread was intended for. And as such, maybe we should discontinue.
We agree to disagree.
If you can show me any OFFICIAL document that does NOT depict President Obama as teh first AFRICAN AMERICAN President of the United States, then I will gladly extend my apologies and agree with you.
As I said before, I dont disagree with any inference if other races within his gene pool. I am adding that he is not unusual because many of US BLACKS are as well. I dont have to run down the list of my ancestral line to prove it.
I am Black, Obama ia Black. If you dont agree...I respect that; you have a right to your opinion as well.
