In Lovin Memory of Onika Bostic

Onika Bostic, Member of Soca Band Burning Flames, Died earlier this month after a car accident in Trinidad. May she rest in peace!!

Onika Bostic Mash It Up

Onika Bostic is considered to be a mix of brains and beauty; she has strong work ethics and a passionate zest for life.

Just barely into her twenties, this native daughter of Port of Spain is no stranger to setting and attaining goals at a young age. She attended Sacred Heart Girls School where as a member of the choir where she began singing. Onika would continue with her schooling by attending Saint François Girls College where she balanced a full schedule of Music, Ballet, Track Sprinting, Swim Meets, and Martial Arts. She did all this while maintaining top marks academically.

Onika looks up to her mother for love and the guidance that has gotten her this far., “School provides you with something to always drop back on!”, Onika graduated at the age of 15. At the age of 16, Onika became a member of the “Gem Radio” family, Gem broadcasted in Antigua & Barbuda, Trinidad & Tobago, Dominica, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, and The Leeward Islands. Onika found a profession she loved and has not ruled out returning to it one day.

In 1999, Onika Bostic was faced with one of the toughest decision she had to make. But she accepted the challenge, packed her bags and at age 19 and moved to the island of Antigua to join the legendary band Burning Flames.

Many questioned if Onika would be able to cope with the additional pressures of relocating and fronting such a musical institution with an incredible track record as Burning Flames. But under the tutelage of the brilliant Clarence “Oungku” Edwards, she would quickly silence her critics and win over the proudest and most particular personalities in Caribbean music…the Flames fans!

Since then she has recorded many of the band’s biggest hits. Starting in 1999 with the steamy ballad "Aching", followed in 2000 by "Mud Dung & Almost Naked". Then in 2002 armed with the monster hit "Mash It Up", Onika quickly became a household name and served notice to the industry that she’ll be a force to be reckoned with. "Mash It Up" enjoyed an incredible ride on the charts and wounded up securing the 4t runner up spot in Trinidad & Tobago’s prestigious Soca Monarch Competition.

As the requests for solo performances came rolling in, Onika was forced to split her schedule between band dates and solo appearances. Impressive performances on both fronts would result in her being crowned certifiably, The Youngest Soca Diva.

Now in 2003 Onika is once again riding high with her hits "Wine", and the duet "No Matter What" which she worked on for a longtime with friend Machel Montano. The self proclaimed "Happiest Person In The World" will undoubtedly continue to explore new challenges , while everyone else will be waiting to see what is next, Onika will sure conitinue to reach after her dreams, and prove to herself that she can achieve anything that she has put her mind to.
