cell phone service in jamaica - Jamaica Talk

I was wondering about cellular phone options while down in jamaica there. I have done some research on the net, but I just want to confirm if the information I have is accurate.

I currently use the T-Mobile cellular phone service here in the US. T-Mobile here uses the GSM network just like Digicel in Jamaica and in fact, T-Mobile phones work down there(it piggbacks on the Digicel Network) while still retaining your US number. Of course, charges are higher because you are piggybacking on another network.

Another option I just found out today when I am in Jamaica is to purchase a Digicel prepaid Jamaican SIM Card which already comes with a Jamaican telephone number and JA$650 worth of talk time and insert it into my current phone.

I checked the Digicel website and I didn't see any Digicel stores listed for Negril. Do the regular shops sell the prepaid Digicel prepaid SIM cards and "Flex" refill cards or do I need to find the nearest Digicel store.

Also, assuming that the phone works there, will the charger also work even though they use 110v versus 220 here in the US?

DigiFlex refill cards are available at several places. Vendors sell them on the street, pharmacies, gas stations and many shops sell them. Also, you can top up the credit on your Digicel, C&W and MiPhone from NCB ATM machines. You can also top up Digicel phone credit via the Web with their WebFlex facillitiy on their website.

The pre-paid SIM cards are available at Digicel outlets only as far as I know. There should be some in Negril. Check the online yellow pages at http://www.jamaicayp.com

Hmmm... most of the electrical stuff coming from the US works here, and I thought that you all were using 110 /120V. If that's not the case, then I dunno what to tell ya. Best to call your cell company on that one...

Be careful and contact your service provider first because some have your phone locked so you can't swap out. For example my service provider would charge me $250 CAD to unlock my phone so I can swap out. It was cheaper just to use the phone in Jamaica and pay roaming charges. One thing I also found out is that it was cheaper for me to make calls in Jamaica than receive them. I was billed $1.50/minute on an incoming call, but only $0.54 on outgoing calls.

I also use T-Mobile here in the US but when I took it Jamaica in April it did not work.

Its not the service provider, you have to make sure your handset is a world phone.

try bringing with you an old phone that doesn't have service anymore and have it set up for JA service. costs is around 5000J. before you say yeah but the phone is locked! remember jamacains can always find a way...I've done this a couple times with old verizon phones after verizon told me it was impossible.HA!

I know here in London 3,LG and Lobster mobiles were supposed 2 be "unlockable" and every phone that is locked can be unlocked i have had a nokia unlocked when i get my v3 razar i will unlock it 2 take 2 jamdung and by a sim out there and put in my phone simple, the phone will be quadband but i changing it anyway!

I think that is the best thing 2 get the phone unlocked A.S.A.P and after u use it in JA just change back the SIM and ur good 2 go.

P.S. it costs 10 pounds(JA $1000 odd) 2 get it unlocked.
