I dont' know what US immigration is like but Canadian immigration also told me to gather things like receipts for gifts that have been purchased between you, also letters of reference from family and friends who've met your partner, and his family & friends who've met you.
I went through all this stuff too, but then the relationship went belly up. But at least I gathered some intelligence before that happened.
